JUXTAPOSE- Creativity Challenge

THE CHALLENGE

Combine TWO images using LAYER MASKS to create a visually interesting result. Use contrast in image, color, and value.

DESIGN EXAMPLES

"Op artists", like BRIDGET RILEY  and VICTOR VASARELY
are great examples of how patterns can be used to make interesting visuals.

TOOLS

Layer masks
Selecting tools (wand, select by color range)
Adjustment Layers

COOL TRICK

Create a black and white design in Illustrator, then drag it into Photoshop and create a mask from it....

OR

Use select by color range to select parts of an image to use as a mask on ANOTHER image....

Here is one example using a pattern as a mask:

And the Layers I used....

AND using a photo as a mask:

I used the "select by color range" to select the face.... then made it into a mask!

Notice the Layer Mask is the same as the face!

Here is another view of the Layers.....

Pathfinder Challenge!

Identity Design (logo design) is another important designer's skill. This challenge begins to strengthen your speed, control and skills when building logos with Illustrator.

Research, Collect and post 5 of your favorite "town logos" from this site http://pinktentacle.com/2010/04/50-japanese-town-logos-with-kanji/

Use the pathfinder tool, shaper tool and the "option", "shift" and "command" keys to recreate THREE of the logos.

Your challenge is to recreate them accurately and efficiently using Illustrator. The completed drawings should have no extra lines...

SCREENSHOT ENVY......?

SCREENSHOT ENVY

Creatively misuse SCREENSHOTS and the BLOG to visually describe a theme...

Push the technology until it "breaks".....

(Screenshot is "command" + shift + 4)

Required:

• Work from PHOTOGRAPHS, not artwork
• Make the image have areas of EMPHASIS
• Post your image on your blog.
• Post an explanation of your theme, using at least three sentences.

Consider
*what happens to a small screen shot image if you enlarge or stretch it... interesting
* Use the clipping mask feature to "crop" an enlarged image to fit the grid....

Creativity Questions

* How will you organize your image on the blog page?

* How will you make EMPHASIS?

* What is the surprise to keep the audience looking?

Posting Your Book of Designs

Post images of each page in your book, and the cover design.

For EACH page, write answers to these questions:

• What is the object of EMPHASIS in the design?
• How does the design relate to your THEME?

Post up to three photos of the completed book to show how the images were organized. Photos should use a "backdrop" of white, or black. Photos should be in focus, clear and composed well.

Here are some examples: http://icodesigns.blogspot.com/2016/03/book-pages.html

and here @ http://icodesigns.blogspot.com/2016/03/built-book.html

PLEASE MAP THE DESIGN of one page.........

* Place a screen shot of your design in Illustrator, lock it, use drawing tools to show Emphasis and Movement.

What if the MASK didn't MOVE?

Here is another twist on the creation of movement with masks..... move the image, not the mask!

Here are some interesting examples to see

PANNING SAMPLE

TIMING EXAMPLE

LOOPING EXAMPLE

See how I used type to make a mask?

I made a separate background image that was triple the width of my movie....

I even used Adjustment Layers to change the color of the image....
