Posting the Book Designs

Post all of the four designs for the book to the blog and answer these questions about EACH one....

1. What is the object of EMPHASIS in your work? What makes it visually stand out?

2. How does your design relate to your THEME?

Design Research #2

One of the primary sources for "Modern" Design,  even the teaching of design, the BAUHAUS school and it's designers are an essential part of your design education.

Bauhaus responded to technology and industry with it's design. They sought to integrate all "craft" skills (color, sculpture, drawing, jewelry, etc.) into programs for architecture, furniture, fashion, and others. The result was a school where "craft" and experimenting was important to the fine arts and design.

*Bauhaus was also important in changing the use of TYPE, in design- into an expressive tool.

Questions to answer on your blog are:

1. When and where was the Bauhaus active?

2. Gather two examples of designs created by each of these Bauhaus artists: Marcel Lajos Breuer
(22 May 1902 – 1 July 1981), Herbert Bayer (April 5, 1900 – September 30, 1985), Walter Gropius (German, Berlin 1883–1969 Boston, Massachusetts)

3. Post images of their work and the names of the designers together.  Explain which ONE of the elements of art they used in a unique way..... (they are: SHAPE, COLOR, RHYTHM, LINE, SPACE, VALUE, TEXTURE)

Quick Distraction- Jed McGowan's Artwork

Jed works as an illustrator, so...

much of his artwork tells a story with SHAPES, VALUES, TEXTURE and composition.....

I'm also interested in the cool TEXTURES in his work.... you can get that texture with the "grain" effect in Illustrator.... try it applied to a gradient fill.

See more of his work here @ Jed McGowan

From the New York Times

EVEN BETTER! Check out Dagna Majewska's work! Great use of SHAPES on the page and TEXTURES....

The COLOR Design

The Fourth design uses COLOR to create DEPTH and EMPHASIS.... Here are the requirements:

1. Choose a color SCHEME to use in the design..... post a diagram of it to your blog.

2. Create VALUES with the colors to have a range of lights and darks...

3. Explore the color mixing tools in Illustrator...

Save colors to the SWATCHES

4. Use the color Vocabulary Sheet to help describe how you used colors in your design...
